12 million pounds of lottery funding was invested over three years , 1 million invested into The King's Speech which was a huge success , winning four oscars including best picture , so box office money will go to the UK film council along with british based Momentum Pictures. BFI who have developed movies such as The King's Speech and upcoming films such as Frank , help the production side of films.
Momentum pictures were the leading independent motion picture distributors in the UK and Ireland , well known for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind , The Illusionist and Defiance. Their connection with The King's Speech is that they devote themselves to theatrical distribution in dvd , video , cinema and tv making sure their product is wide spread and crossing the right audiences to maximise profits.
The Kings Speech was shown in 395 cinemas accross the UK , it was ranked number 1 ahead of Little Fockers and most importantly 127 hours , the opening weekends gross figures stood at 3,523,102 pounds , the most for a British film ever , it was at number 1 for another 2 weeks , peaking at 4,401,926 pounds on the weekend of 14-16th January 2011.
The Fighter , a paramount motion picture peaked at 2,118,140 pounds and decreasing by a million the next week , also Horrible Bosses , a Warner Bros picture , getting 2,077,239 pounds on the opening weekend and 1,411,725 the following weekend. A major difference I notice is that new releases such as the two i researched peaked on the opening weekend and decreased the following weeks but The Kings Speech increased on the second week and fell slightly short on the third week. ultimately this shows that The Kings Speech nationally took everyone by storm and increasingly got popular due to its unique storyline and its phenomenal low budget of 8million ($15million) , comparing to Horrible Bosses( $35million) and The Fighter ($25million)
Submarine is a british film released in 2010 with a budget of $1,900,000. On the opening weekend , it recieved 244,476 pounds on the opening weekend and starred in 60 cinemas. The film is directed by Richard Ayoade , his directorial debut. Stars such as Michael Sheen were originally cast but dropped out due to commitment issues towards the film , so the cast are seemingly unknown and a lot are debutants due to the low budget. With a 7.3/10 rating on IMDb it is impressive but the money recieved back wasnt so high , in my opinion due to the lack of big name stars cast in the movie. Companies such as Warp films , Film4 productions and the UK film council helped produce the film
